Incan Cria with DamIncan Cria ProfileIncan Cria1st Incan Cria

Snowmass Incan Emperor’s first cria is here! Check her out. She was born in the beginning of the this month and is a dark fawn. Just look at her legs. She has the straightest legs I have ever seen on a cria. Snowmass Incan Emperor has proven that he can throw dark eyes as the cria’s dam, Cienega Creek Poseidon’s Aphrodite comes from a long line of blue eyed alpacas. This is really exciting for us. The cria, Nefertiti, is doing very well. In the pictures you can see that her neck is bandaged up that is holding a catheter in place. Nefertiti needed to be given plasma as her dam’s milk was coming in slowly therefore her amount of colostrum intake the first 24 hours was low. With a protein level of 4.1 the owners decided to give her plasma. Nefertitit has been jumping around ever since. Her fiber is really beginning to twist and looks great. We think Snowmass Incan Emperor matched with Aphrodite have produced a true winner. To date the owners have advised that 3 ranches have already inquired on her price. Wow! Of course we were one of those ranches as I could not take my eyes off of this small beauty. I had to contain myself as I have two females already confirmed pregnant with Snowmass Incan Emperor’s cria. The first to be due in September. Well we are eagerly awaiting the next cria which is due anytime now.

Summer is coming up quickly. Alpaca ranchers in SE Arizona are busily preparing their alpacas to be sheared by late April through May. For the health of the alpaca you want to get the fiber off of them before summer hits as to not create heat stress. Are you ready?

Tucson Design College Presentation

Posted 3 May, 2007 in Alpaca General | No comments

The Tucson Design College presentation was given without a hitch on Monday, April 9th. I have to send special thanks to Mike and Linda Wood of Square Top Ranch for doing the presentation with us and helping with the powerpoint presentation. We gave a slight background on what alpacas are, but focused mainly on the fiber.

The students of Tucson Design College are entering the AOBA fashion contest. In order to do so they needed to learn what exactly an alpaca is and how the fiber differed from other animals such as sheep. Not only did we bring products to show them the look and feel, but we were able to bring two of Desert Mountain Alpaca Ranch young males. Apollo and Eros were a big hit with the teacher and students.

We would like to thank Elizabeth Heiusler for allowing us to bring the alpacas and present to her class what can be done with the luxurious fiber.
